Experiental Learning in HEXS

HEXS majors and non-majors are encouraged to pursue their purpose through experiential learning opportunities. An array of independent study options, internships, and study away opportunities are supported in our major. 

Independent Study - Research Tract:

To apply for a 1-credit independent study in HEXS (HHP 405-407), students must have completed a Research Methods course (HHP 230 or other) prior to applying and submit a formal research proposal to their intended faculty supervisor during the semester prior to enrollment. Students are encouraged to apply for Roanoke College's prestigious Summer Scholar program and to apply for Pathways Research Funding in collaboration with their faculty mentor (up to $500 may be awarded for your project).

Requirements for a 1-credit independent study in HEXS (HHP 406)

  • Must have completed HHP 230, PSYC 202 or 204, SOC 351 or 352 or POLI/IR/CJUS 209;
  • No less than 8-12 hours of work per week;
  • Must include:
    • Research proposal (prior to- or as a component of your study);
    • Human subjects training certification (if appropriate);
    • IRB application approval;
    • Data collection and analysis;
    • Dissemination of findings at an on-campus or off-campus conference

Requirements for a ½ credit independent study in HEXS (HHP 405, HHP 407)

  • Must have completed HHP 230, PSYC 202 or 204, SOC 351 or 352 or POLI/IR/CJUS 209;
  • No less than 4-6 hours of work per week;
  • One of these options must be completed:
    • Development of a formal literature review and oral presentation of complete research proposal in front of HEXS faculty, OR
    • Data collection, analysis, and dissemination of findings at an on-campus or off-campus conference

*The ½ credit independent study allows students to spread their research experience across a full academic year (essentially, the requirements for a full credit are split in half

Looking for research experience but don’t have the pre-reqs?

Don’t worry – other opportunities exist! Consider volunteering to support a faculty member’s ongoing research agenda, or enroll in the Work-Study Research Program and get paid while you gain research experience. Independent Study - Honors in the Major

HEXS majors who have completed 25 units with a minimum 3.4 GPA in the major are eligible to apply for Honors in the Major distinction by enrolling in HHP 495 (½ credit), 497 (½ credit), or 496 (1 credit). Speak to your academic advisor to learn more about requirements.

Independent Study - Professional Certification Tract:

Students may apply for a 1-credit independent study under HEXS Faculty supervision to pursue one of the following professional certifications: ACSM Certified Personal Trainer, ACSM Exercise Physiologist; NSCA Certified Personal Trainer, NSCA Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist.

Requirements for a 1-credit independent study in the Professional Certification Tract:

  • ACSM C-PT: Must have completed HHP 230, HHP 223, and HHP 325 (may be enrolled in HHP 325 concurrently); HHP 226 and HHP 316 recommended
  • ACSM Exercise Physiologist: Must have completed HHP 230, HHP 223, HHP 325, and HHP 402 (may be enrolled in HHP 402 concurrently); HHP 226 and HHP 316 recommended;
  • NSCA C-PT or CSCS: Must have completed HHP 230, HHP 223, HHP 226, HHP 325; HHP 316 and HHP 402 recommended

Additional requirements for Professional Certification Independent Study:

  • Expected hours of study - no less than 8-12 hours per week;
  • Exam fees and study materials paid by the student;
  • Progressive assignments submitted to faculty mentor weekly or bi-weekly;
  • Must complete the certification exam prior to the end of the final exam period to receive a grade.

Internships in HEXS

Internships provide real-world experience in a career-field of interest. Students may pursue internships as a component of a major (B.A.) or as an elective. Students may apply for a supervised 1-credit internship (120 hours) by contacting Mr. Shawn Urbanek (urbanek@roanoke.edu).
