Auditions
Auditions - Fall 2026 (The Welkin)
Everyone is welcome - majors, non-majors, experienced, and new! If you have questions, reach out to Nelson (barre@roanoke.edu)
The Welkin will audition on September 13 and 14 from 7-10pm in Olin Theater, with callbacks on September 15.
You may audition for the show even if you are already cast in Horse Girls. Please choose a monologue for the show for which you are auditioning.
Everyone should come to their audition slot prepared to perform a monologue and take direction. When choosing your monologue, please do not select one from the plays that we are producing.
- Non-majors/minors may read a one-minute monologue that we provide (see below) or one of your choosing. You do not need to memorize the monologue, though it is recommended; we will provide a physical copy to hold while you perform.
- If you are a Theatre major/minor, you must memorize your monologue(s) for the play for which you are auditioning. There will be monologues appropriate for the show at the call board, which you may select, but you can also choose your own. We would suggest you avoid film monologues.
Sign up for a ten-minute audition slot on the call board outside the Olin Theater backstage area, or email Nelson (barre@roanoke.edu) to inquire about availability.
Please find below a list of monologue options for the The Welkin auditions:
The Welkin
- Emilia 3; Emilia (“What can I say to you?” p.74-75)
- Jane; 1536 (“I guess, I just...” p.99)
- Leo; In the Next Room (“Oh, dear Catherine…” p.136-137)
There will be copies of these monologues on the call board outside of Olin Theater's backstage.
NOTE: If you need directions to any of these locations, please email Nelson (barre@roanoke.edu). He will personally give you a tour of the building!
AUDITION WORKSHOP and VIEWING
Don't know what to prepare for your auditions? Never done this before? Want to brush up on your monologue and get feedback? Just want to see what this is all about? Our acting professor Danielle Barre can help you out! Danielle will host an audition workshop on Saturday, August 29 from 1:00-2:30pm. Everyone is welcome! Get in touch with Danielle (dbarre@roanoke.edu) if you want some help.
We will also host an informal reading of the play. Come to the Olin Green Room for the reading:
Sunday, August 30 at 1:00pm – The Welkin
All are welcome at these events, whether you plan to audition or not! This is a chance just to prepare for auditions or just familiarize yourself with the story so you know what we have coming up. It is not an audition. There will be snacks and drinks provided! Have questions? Email the directors, Danielle (dbarre@roanoke.edu), Mary (mllangan@mail.roanoke.edu), or Nelson (barre@roanoke.edu)
THE WELKIN
The Welkin by Lucy Kirkwood, directed by Nelson Barre, will be a full production with performances on Thursday, November 12 through Saturday, November 14 at 7:30pm each night on the Crystal Lynn Van Hise Stage at Olin Theater.
You should prepare a one-minute monologue from a contemporary play (either comedic or dramatic). That selection could include one that we provide (copies on the call board), or you may select your own. Theatre majors/minors should memorize their monologues; non-majors/minors can read from a script.
Please sign up on the callboard or contact director Nelson Barre (barre@roanoke.edu) for a ten-minute audition slot. Feel free to get in touch if you have questions about the play or audition process.
