Scott is Roanoke’s first Fulbright to Europe

Savannah Scott '17 has accepted a Fulbright study/research award to study at the University of Technology of Vienna, Austria (the Technische Universität Wien.) Scott, who is from Huntington, N.Y., is a member of the Honors Program and a biology major, with minors in chemistry and French. She will be studying water quality in Austria from October 2017 to June 2018.
Scott is Roanoke's first Fulbright to a European country. Austria awarded only seven Fulbright research awards this year and Scott successfully competed against students with masters degrees and Ph.D. students.
Scott will be doing environmental microbiology research with Dr. Andreas Farnleitner for ICC Water and Health, specifically using microbial source tracking methods to assess levels of water contamination from human sources. She will be testing a variety of rivers and other bodies of water, including the Danube. Scott also will conduct interviews with members of the Austrian communities around the sample sites where she will be testing to measure public awareness of the importance and current state of water quality in Austria.

Scott credits Dr. Brooks Crozier, professor of biology, as a tremendous help in the Fulbright process. Scott was part of the Summer Research program for two years which is when she worked with Dr. Crozier.
Scott also looks forward to interacting with the Viennese community through the EULE program, an environmental educational program geared toward children. It is meant to educate young people about important environmental issues so they will grow up to be environmentally conscious. As part of this organization, she plans to discuss the principles of water quality and highlight their importance to the world as a whole.
After her year as a Fulbright Scholar, Scott plans to enroll in graduate school to earn a Ph.D. in microbiology.
