Difficult news to share
May 19, 2026
Dear Maroon Family,
It is with abounding sadness that I reach out to you today to let you know about the death of Myles Rainey, a beloved Maroon from Thomasville, North Carolina. Myles was a sophomore member of the Roanoke College football team and Young Life, and his remarkable spirit has made a positive impression on many of us here at Roanoke.
It is with even greater sorrow that I inform you, at the Rainey family’s request, that Myles’ death came as a result of suicide. The Raineys believe that Myles should be defined by his life, not his death, and it is their hope that this tragedy will remind us that mental health challenges are common — and that there is an abundance of support for those who are struggling.
I know you will all join me in offering compassion, care and prayers for the Rainey family, including Myles’ older brother, Aydin, who is also a current Roanoke College student and member of the football team. Please hold this family in your heart as they celebrate Myles’ inspiring life and weather the intense grief associated with losing someone they loved deeply.
I would also like to request that you look out for your fellow Maroons during this dark time, including all of Myles’ friends and the entire football team and staff. The storm of emotions evoked by the loss of a friend, teammate, classmate or student can be challenging to confront. Please check on your friends and be generous with your compassion and empathy.
If you believe a friend needs professional support —or if you are feeling overwhelmed and need help as you try to reckon with this loss — please know that many people care and are eager to help. The college offers the following resources for this purpose:
Tonight (Tuesday, May 19), from 4:30-6:30 p.m., drop-in counseling will be available in the Dean of Students Office in Alumni Gym.
On Thursday, May 21, at 7 p.m., please join us for a candlelight vigil in memory of Myles in Antrim Chapel. Counselors will be available on site following the tribute.
The Counseling Center is available to support our student and campus community. Please call 540-375-2286 for information or to schedule an appointment.
TimelyCare is also a no cost online medical and counseling resource provided by the College for students.
For employees, the college offers confidential, no cost, short-term counseling services through the Employee Assistance Program. To schedule an appointment, please call EAP at 540-989-6605.
Finally, please remember that the National Suicide and Crisis Lifeline can always be reached quickly by dialing 988, and their caring counselors are equipped to address mental health struggles, emotional distress, alcohol or drug use concerns, and more.
As we circle the wagons to lift up the Rainey family and our own community with kindness and compassion, let us remember that what we have loved becomes a part of us that never dies — and, in this way, Myles will remain with us all.
With hope,
Frank Shushok Jr.
