International Relations Program
Global. Analytical. Versatile.
The International Relations major is designed to complement Roanoke College’s liberal arts mission by equipping students with a deep understanding of global dynamics and governance. This multidisciplinary program fosters analytical skills through the study of international systems, comparative politics, and the cultural, historical, and economic forces that shape global interactions. Students learn to explain complex causal relationships, engage in cross-national analysis, and critically assess development and globalization processes. They also gain the ability to summarize key debates and policy issues in contemporary international affairs.
Beyond content knowledge, the major emphasizes advanced competencies in writing, public speaking, critical thinking, and data analysis – skills essential for interpreting and communicating political information effectively. Active learning is encouraged both in and out of the classroom, preparing students to articulate complex ideas to diverse audiences. International Relations graduates emerge as globally-minded citizens, ready to pursue careers in law, politics, public health, human rights, and more.
