Sociology Program
Explore Society. Understand Inequality. Drive Change.
The Sociology program at Roanoke College empowers students to become thoughtful, informed, and engaged citizens. Rooted in a liberal arts tradition, the program emphasizes the development of a sociological imagination – an ability to see the connections between individual experiences and broader social forces. Students explore the foundations of social inequality and gain a deep understanding of how culture, social structures, and institutions shape human behavior and societal outcomes.
Through a curriculum that blends theory, research, and real-world application, students build essential skills in critical thinking, written and oral communication, and data analysis. Opportunities for internships, community engagement, independent research, and study away allow students to apply their learning beyond the classroom. Sociology students graduate with the tools to make meaningful contributions to their communities and the world.
