What’s Next? Planning for after RC

Because Sociology students develop skills in critical thinking, research methods and analysis, and communication, they are well prepared for both graduate studies and a variety of careers.  

Along with the PLACE, Sociology faculty are prepared to help students explore careers and tailor an educational program to meet their interests. Ninety-one percent of those who participated in the alumni survey indicated receiving job offers or an acceptance to graduate school within six months of graduation. Sociology majors pursue a wide variety of jobs and careers, including the following: 

• In local, state, and the federal government, working in areas such as housing, health, welfare, minority affairs, and population. 
• In the business world, working in management, public relations, community affairs, real estate, and insurance. 
• In social services, working directly with children or the elderly, offenders, the poor, or the physically and mentally ill, or working in an agency that administers services. 
• In healthcare, working in administration, advocacy, counseling, medical practice, public policy, research and data analysis, social work, and occupational and physical therapy. 
• In policymaking and administration in all types of employment settings, working in government agencies, community relations, health agencies, or law enforcement. 
• In education as teachers in elementary or secondary schools. 
• In numerous other fields, ranging from college admissions and student services to working for a research organization to working in the media.
