What is the purpose of the staff council?
The staff council exists to further the mission of Roanoke College by fostering staff involvement, communication, collaboration and advocacy. The council serves as a representative voice for staff, helping ensure that staff perspectives are heard and considered in institutional conversations and decision-making. The staff moderator will act as the counterpart to the faculty moderator and will serve on Roanoke College's Shared Governance Council along with the SGA president.
Why was the staff council created?
The staff council was established through the work of the Shared Governance Task Force—a collaborative effort involving faculty, staff, students and trustees —to broaden participation in institutional decision-making. Historically, staff did not have a formal collective voice in the development and implementation of college policies, procedures and initiatives. The staff council helps address that need by providing a structured avenue for staff engagement, collaboration and communication.
How are all staff members represented on the staff council?
The 10-member staff council was designed to reflect the college’s employee population through proportional representation across divisions at the time of nomination and voting. Members were nominated by themselves or their colleagues, vetted for eligibility by human resources, and selected to serve as representatives for their respective areas.
