Major Declaration
Declaration Process
As a transfer student, your academic plan may look different from another student’s based on your previous coursework, goals, and future plans. Because of this, the declaration process is not always the same for every student.
Transfer students are encouraged to share their goals and plans with their advisor. Your advisor will help you determine whether beginning the declaration process during registration is the right next step.
When to Consider Declaring Your Major
Some students may benefit from declaring their major at the time of registration. This may include students who:
- Are bringing in more than 17 credits from a previous institution
- Have a clear post-graduate goal (such as medical school, veterinary school, physical/occupational therapy, etc.)
- Feel confident in the major they plan to pursue
When to Wait
There are also many valid reasons to wait a semester before declaring. This may include students who:
- Want to explore different majors or career paths
- Are bringing in fewer than 17 credits
- Are still deciding on their academic direction

Advisor Guidance
Regardless of your situation, your advisor will help you make the best decision based on your individual circumstances. While Roanoke College allows students to declare a major at any point after admission, we strongly encourage having a conversation with your advisor first so you understand the process and implications.
The Declaration Process
Roanoke College uses an online Program Declaration Form.
Once submitted:
- The department chair for your selected program reviews and approves your request
- The form is then processed by the Registrar’s Office
- A new faculty advisor within your major is assigned to you
Your original advisor will help connect you with your new faculty advisor to ensure a smooth transition.
Advising Support
For most declared transfer students, your transfer advisor will remain a secondary advisor for your first academic year. This ensures you have continued support as you adjust to Roanoke’s systems, processes, and resources.
