About IPOR
The Institute for Policy and Opinion Research (IPOR) conducted regular surveys in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Polls focused on political, economic, and social issues of importance throughout the state. IPOR was the only organization measuring consumer sentiment in Virginia. Polls were conducted quarterly in February, May, August and November.
IPOR's polls were underwritten by Roanoke College as a public service, providing Virginians and state leaders with information regarding the opinions of its citizens on various issues. IPOR was nonpartisan and nonideological. It worked with governmental agencies, nonprofits, and private businesses when it did not conflict with mission of Roanoke College or the independence of IPOR.
IPOR History
The Institute for Policy and Opinion Research (IPOR), formerly known as the Center for Community Research, was founded at Roanoke College in 1983 for the purpose of involving faculty and students in various research projects to benefit the community — local, state, and national. These projects provided important information to community leaders and residents while allowing students to learn by gaining valuable and practical firsthand experience in program evaluation and survey research. Faculty members also used IPOR resources in their professional research.
While its early focus was on the Roanoke Valley, IPOR expanded its reach to include the state of Virginia and, in some cases, the nation. It conducted regular polls during election seasons and quarterly consumer sentiment polls. IPOR was one of the primary sources of information on public opinion within the commonwealth.
