Future Students FAQs

Housing Selection

How and when can I pick my room?
Students will be able to choose their rooms during the week of July 6.  Housing selection happens completely online. You'll go to the housing portal at roanoke.edu/housingselection and log in with your Maroon ID and password.  You will be given a timeslot based on your date of deposit for when you can log on to choose a room.  More information will be sent to your Roanoke College email account, so make sure to check it when housing selection gets closer!

Roommates

Can I be roommates with someone I know?
Our students are able to choose their own roommates.  On the housing portal you will need to send a roommate request prior to choosing your housing.  As long as your friend accepts your roommate request before you choose a room, you will be able to add them to the room.

Do I have to have a roommate?
All incoming freshmen are required to live in a double, triple, or quadruple room and will have a roommate(s).

What if I deposited really early but the person I want to live with deposited really late?
That's fine. Whoever deposited first will have the earlier timeslot and will be able to add the other person into a room if you are both accepted roommates within the housing portal.

What if I don't have a roommate?
That's OK!  You should still pick a space during your selection time.  When it is time for you to select a room, you can see how other students answered their lifestyle questions.

Can suites be selected by incoming students?
Suites are typically reserved for upperclass students in spring semester's returning housing selection process.  However, should there be any of the 4 person suites in Maxey Hall, they will be available for incoming students.  These suites are made up of two double rooms with a shared bathroom cleaned by the residents.

Marion 4 person suites are not available for selection during the upcoming housing selection process.  There will be available double rooms in Marion for new students.

If you have a group of 4 students that want to live together, there may be quadruple rooms available in Smith Hall.

Move In

When can I move into my room?
Move in day begins at 8:00am.  To aid with the flow of traffic, we will send you a specific time to begin moving in that day.  This message will be sent to your Roanoke College email.

What if I need to move in early for a pre-orientation program or athletic team?
Incoming students who are coming to campus early for a pre-orientation program or for an athletic team may move-in on days approved by their program supervisor or their coach. Residence Life & Housing will work with you to make sure you have access to your building.

What if I need to move in early for traveling purposes or because I want extra time to move in?
Due to security concerns, we cannot allow residents to move in prior to this date and time, unless they are participating in a pre-orientation program or athletic team. These students must have permission from the program supervisor or athletic coach, who will let Residence Life & Housing know the date their students may move in.
