Japan in the Long Twentieth Century
Course Overview:
How have the Japanese people remembered and commemorated the turbulent course of events of the previous century? This course examines Japanese culture through visiting museums, historical sites, and conversation with local people to learn about their experience and memory of the past century. We will visit four major cities (Hiroshima, Kyoto, Nara, and Tokyo) and important sites like Showakan, Yushukan, the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum, and the Fukuromachi Elementary School Peace Museum. Knowledge of Japanese language not required.
