LGBTQ+ Resources
Student Wellness Services is a welcoming, supportive environment for both members and allies of the LGBTQ+ community. Below is a partial list of campus and community resources available to students.
Campus & Local Resources
- RC Drive support group
- RC Student Wellness Services: Offers services and wellness information for LGBTQ+ students
- RC Office of Multicultural Affairs: Provides support and advocacy for LGBTQ+ students
- Out of the Closet Project: Provides free clothing to transgender and non-binary student
- Roanoke Diversity Center: Home to a host of support groups, social events and educational programs
- Council of Community Services: Sponsor of the Drop-In Center, which offers information on sexual health as well as HIV/AIDS and HEP C testing
- Planned Parenthood: Offers education, resources and services referrals for the LGBTQ+ community at its Roanoke location
National Resources, including Crisis Lines
- The Trevor Project: Founded in 1998 by the creators of the Academy Award®-winning short film TREVOR, The Trevor Project is the leading national organization providing crisis intervention and suicide prevention services to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning (LGBTQ+) young people ages 13-24.
- Trevor Lifeline: Call 866-488-7386 to connect with a trained volunteer counselor who is ready to listen.
- TrevorText: Text "Trevor" to 1-202-304-1200 to connect with a trained counselor. This service is available on Fridays between 4:00-8:00 p.m. (Eastern). Standard text messaging rates apply.
- TrevorChat: Visit TrevorChat to talk with a trained, volunteer counselor online. This is a free, confidential chat service available 7 days a week from 3:00-9:00 p.m. (Eastern).
- Trans Lifeline: Call 877-565-8860 to connect with the hotline of this national, trans-led organization. Trans Lifeline is dedicated to improving the quality of trans lives by responding to the critical needs of the community with direct service, material support, advocacy, and education. Its vision is to fight the epidemic of trans suicide and improve overall life outcomes for trans people by facilitating justice-oriented, collective community aid.
- UConn Rainbow Center Gender and Pronoun Guide: Created by staff at the University of Connecticut, this is an educational resource.
- Human Rights Campaign: HRC is a national organization dedicated to educating the public and advocating for LGBTQ+ equality. It offers a wide variety of resources for the LGBTQ+ community and its allies, including a Guide to Coming Out.
- GLAAD: For over 30 years, GLAAD has been at the forefront of cultural change, accelerating acceptance for the LGBTQ+ community.
LGBTQ+ and People of Color
- Human Rights Campaign: HRC also has resources for BIPOC individuals who are coming out.
- Familia: Trans Queer Liberation Movement: This organization seeks to build a national movement to address, organize, educate and advocate for the issues that are important to the LGBTQ+ Latinx community.
LGBTQ+ and Religion
- Center for LGBTQ and Gender Studies in Religion: This center's mission is to advance the well-being of lesbian, gay, bisexual, queer and transgender people and to transform faith communities and the wider society by taking a leading role in shaping a new public discourse on religion, gender identity and sexuality through education, research, community building and advocacy.
