Roanoke students to compete at statewide ethics bowl
February 03, 2026
Three students from Roanoke College will compete in this month's statewide Applied Ethics Bowl sponsored by the Virginia Foundation for Independent Colleges. The team will go head-to-head against other top teams from Virginia’s leading independent colleges and universities, deliberating on a range of case studies related to this year's theme: “Ethics and Business.”
Representing the Maroons will be Emma Durran '29, James Moffatt '28 and Alaina Rogers '27. The team's faculty coordinator is Steve Capaldo, a professor of practice in law and director of students finding purpose.
This is the 26th annual collegiate Applied Ethics Bowl. Presented by TowneBank, it will take place Feb. 13 on the University of Richmond campus. Nearly 40 leaders from a variety of fields — including business, cybersecurity, education, engineering, law, finance and more — will serve as judges in the event. After four rounds of competition, the top team from each division will meet in the final round to determine the champion.
The Applied Ethics Bowl challenges students to think deeply about real-world ethical dilemmas and form conclusions that are nuanced, well-reasoned and defensible in debate. The Virginia Foundation for Independent Colleges is a nonprofit organization that champions the distinctive strengths and values of the commonwealth's independent colleges and universities.
