Active Threat Response Information
If there's an active threat situation on campus, the campus community will be given instructions via the Maroon Alerts system. It's also important to remember Avoid / Deny / Defend and to obey all instructions given by law enforcement and college officials.
Call 911 & Campus Safety (540-375-2310) as soon as it is safe to do so!
AVOID |
- Quicky escape from the area via doors, windows, stairs, etc. |
DENY | - Hide in an area out of attackers' view. - Lock / Block ALL entry points to your hiding space. - SILENCE your cell phone. |
DEFEND | - Commit to decisive and aggressive action. YOUR LIFE DEPENDS ON IT. - Use improvised weapons - chairs, books, anything you can get your hands on. - Neutralize the threat. |

Information to Provide Law Enforcement / 911
* Location of the attacker(s) and victims, if known
* Number of attacker(s)
* Physical Description of the attacker(s)
- Identity of the subject(s), if known
- Gender / race / physical features / age / tattoos or other distinguishing marks
- Clothing description, including if they're carrying bags / backpacks
- Number and types of weapon(s) if known
* The number of injured / types of injuries at the current location, if known
How to Act when Law Enforcement Arrives
* Remain calm and follow all instructions given by law enforcement
* Immediately raise hands and spread fingers
* Keep hands visible at all times until otherwise instructed
* Avoid making quick / abrupt movements toward first responder personnel
* Avoid pointing, screaming and/or yelling
