Members of Roanoke College’s Xi chapter of Pi Kappa Phi volunteered a combined 300 hours at the March 29 NASCAR race in Martinsville, Virginia, to support The Ability Experience. The Ability Experience is the fraternity’s nationally recognized philanthropy focused on empowering individuals with disabilities and changing the way society views disabilities.
The Pi Kapp brothers spent the weekend of the NASCAR Cup Series Cook Out 400 working 12-hour shifts at the Martinsville Speedway, where they sold concessions. In all, they raised nearly $3,000 to support The Ability Experience.
“Though the days were long, the effort was worthwhile,” said Don Potter, advisor for the Xi chapter. “This initiative reflects the lifelong commitment of Pi Kappa Phi brothers to learn more, grow more and contribute more to their community.”
This project also reflects two guiding principles of Roanoke College’s mission: leadership and character. Through its strategic plan, Roanoke has woven the development of these two attributes into the co-curriculum.Service opportunities like this one give students the opportunity to make a difference in their community while also encouraging personal growth and the pursuit of character.
