Meet the Coach
Margaret Cornwell, from Tuscaloosa Alabama, has been teaching riding lessons professionally since 2002. She graduated from Ferrum University in 2002 with a degree in marketing where she rode in the IHSA open division for two years. Margaret has been teaching lessons since 2002, starting as a leasing operation at her farm in Alabama, before moving to Blacksburg VA in 2005. During her time as a private trainer, she had 30 boarders and frequently competed at the local and A-level competitions. She is based out of Healing Strides of Virginia, in Franklin County, Virginia. Healing Strides of Virginia is a PATH certified therapy barn that offers able-bodied lessons, para-dressage and hippotherapy lessons. Healing Strides cohosts the Roanoke College IHSA team, Ferrum University IDA, or Interscholastic Dressage Association, and Ferrum IHSA team. The wide range of disciplines offers a breadth of horses for riders of all abilities. Margaret has been coaching IHSA and IDA sine 2007, during her time she has brought many riders up to be competitive at a higher level. During her time coaching the Randolph IHSA team she brought many riders to Regional championships, zone championships, and one rider in 2004 to finish 8th in the National Championships. When she went on to coach at her alma mater, she started from the ground up, working on training before showing. Many of her riders have qualified for Regional championships since her start as head coach, and her first zone qualifier was in 2018. Margret began coaching Roanoke College IHSA fall 2018. Margret strives for expanding rider development, both in the saddle and horsemanship as a whole. Margaret brings her years of experience, professionalism, and passion to the barn as well as to the show ring.
